Having initiative and a sense of business acumen, father launched bought a small plot of land and erected a store. In the spring of 1909 he opened his place of business under the firm name of "M.C. Father and Mother then lived in "The Old House", a three two roomed log dwelling that had been used by my Grandfather and Grandmother Clarks for sometime before that time. The house was made of logs but had at a later time been covered with rusting siding which to this day has not been painted.
Needing more room, father built a small "lean to" that served as a kitchen. It was in this old home that two sisters and a brother were born. These are; Hazel, Aug. 10, 1909, Helen April 21, 1911, Clifton Shepherd, March 26, 1912 (died […] a mo. later)
