Mary Jane Kelson Ensign was a half sister to Julia Searles Ensign. Julia was the first wife of John Wickersham Woolley. Mary Jane was the daughter of Samuel Ensign and his third wife Ruth Kelson. Mary Jane was married to Henry Beaumont Rugg. they had 3 sons (one being my grandfather Horace Frederick Rugg 1886-1980) and 1 daughter. Mary Jane died at the age of 31 in 1890. Her daughter Mary Jane Ruth Rugg died the following year at the age of 1. Fearing for the safety of the remaining children Ruth went to court and gained guardianship and latter adopted her 3 grandsons. She and her grandsons went to live on the Woolley farm where she cleaned and cooked. In 1892 a couple of years after Mary Jane's death she was sealed, with her children, to her brother-in-law John Wickersham Woolley. The 1900 and 1910 Federal US Census has my grandfather listed as Horace F Ensign. In 1903 Horace received his Patriarchal Blessing it listed Henry B and Mary Jane Ensign Rugg as parents and as adoptive parents as John W and Mary Jane Ensign Woolley. My grandfather had fond memories of living with his Uncle John on the Woolley Farm saying those were the best years of his childhood. Composed by Michael Rugg
