Tribute to My Special Big Sister and Second Mother

by June S. Harker

[added in pencil:] Funeral Notes? (possible use at funeral by June (not necessary)

My earliest memories of childhood in Lethbridge, Alberta are highlighted by the FAIRY who played such an exciting role in the lives of my sister Lois and myself. We were motivated to good behavior, hoping that the fairy would bring us a little surprise package. On one such occasion, Dorothy was telling us about the fairy when we heard a noise on the ceiling and saw a small package dropping to the floor. On opening it, we found it was a doll dress from the fairy. Dorothy made our childhood a delightful experience.

Lois and I were always proud of the beautiful clothes she designed for herself and for us. Her creative talents were used for the good of the church and as she promoted the Indian placement program and research and genealogy by example, posters, games, etc.

I've always admired her beauty of features and character, her compassion for others, her achievements in laying piano, in art, dancing, tennis, ice skating, etc. Her good example has been a positive influence during my entire 62 years.

Dorothy and Ellsworth have always shown love and concern for the Hyrum Smith family. Their home has always been open to us and many other relatives who needed lodging. Lois and I each enjoyed spending a school year with them in Idaho during our teens--Lois in Victor and I in Parker.

In addition to raising 9 children of their own, they took in two Lamanite youths on the Indian Placement Program. Both Ellsworth and Dorothy have given freely of their time and talents and means in church service and helping those in need. Many East Asian refugees have benefited from their compassionate service. 1978-1984

The greatest tribute to Ellsworth and Dorothy is evident in the lives of their wonderful posterity, who have followed the good example of their parents. I am sure the Lord is pleased with them.
